What is science?

Image of blind men with elephant

Some blind men once approached an elephant. The first one touched its belly, and told the others, It is a wall. The second touched the tusk and replied, No way dude, it's sharp. This is a spear. To which the third replied after touching its tail, You gotta be kidding. This is most certainly a rope.

The elephant then twitched its ears when the fourth guy touched it. He said, It's obviously a hand fan, how do you guys explain the wind blowing? The fifth one, touching the squirming trunk said, It's a snake, man. The sixth guy rested against the leg and concluded, IT IS A PILLAR!

Science consists of both observation of nature and the inference made. To get the big picture right, we need to harmonize the observations made from different angles.

  1. Does Radiocarbon Dating prove/disprove biblical chronology?

Noah's flood and the 7 year famine recorded in the book of Genesis can be dated by several methods: By counting the years from ancient genealogies, dendrochronology, ice cores and radiocarbon dating. Uncalibrated radiocarbon dates from the 7 year famine is 4100 years before present (bp). The cataclysmic event that wiped out many ancient civilizations has been dated to 11400 years ago. Even though radiocarbon dates don't match biblical chronology, much simpler methods based on dendrochronology and ice core data match biblical chronology more closely. The uncalibrated radiocarbon dates don't match because the amount of atmospheric radiocarbon has not been a constant. The calibrated dates don't match because tree rings consist of newer carbon being deposited in old rings. Read more...

  2. Menkaure - The Pharaoh who ruled during the Exodus

Menkaure ruled Egypt when Moses led the Israelites out of slavery. Archaeologists have found cattle bone that match the description of the first Passover meal. Pottery left over after the Passover meal have Menkaure's inscription. Menkaure's pyramid was unfinished, indicating the workers left without finishing the work. Menkaure was not succeeded by his oldest son. Scripture records that the first son of Pharaoh died prior to the Exodus. There was a funeral procession when a Pharaoh died, where his dead body would be brought by boat to his pyramid. However, around Menkaure's pyramid, no boat pits have been found so far. This might have happened if the Pharaoh drowned and his body went missing. There is evidence of a 7 year famine a few generations before Menkaure. Scripture records that the Israelites when to Egypt because of a 7 year famine. The historian Herodotus wrote that money was scarce after Menkaure's reign. The bible records that the Egyptians gave the Israelites gold and silver as they left Egypt. Read more...

  3. Healthy Diet

Healthy eating is about meeting your daily nutritional requirements, while avoiding the deficiencies and excesses that contribute to the risk of diet-related diseases. This entails making informed choices about what foods to eat, and practicing good food habits. You can achieve these when you keep three things in mind - balance, variety and moderation. 4. Uranium lead Dating

Uranium Lead dating is done by assuming radiogenic Pb originates from the in-situ decay of Uranium. Radiogenic Pb is sometimes present in the absence Uranium and natural systems are not in secular equilibrium. The formulas used to determine the age of a rock from the 207Pb/235U and 206Pb/238U ratios are only valid for systems that start off from secular equilibrium. These ratios are useful to compute an upper-bound for the age of the sample. An upper-bound for the age of coal is 350k years, 3 orders less than what is commonly thought that the carboniferous period occured 350 million years ago. Read more...

  5. The Tower of Babel

Gobekli Tepe, Turkey, bears all the marks of the Tower of Babel. It is located near Mt Ararat (where the ark landed), it is located on top of a hill with the horizon visible (Babel was built so that they don't disperse) and constructed with concrete. Read more...

  6. Why were Meteors created?

These chunks of rock, wander aimlessly in space. Some of their trajectories occasionally cross earth's orbit, leading to fiery collisions. John the Baptist once said, "out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham..." Well, studying meteorites can make you a believer. Read more...

  7. SNe1987A: Trinary Supernovae

The fusion of light elements like Hydrogen produce energy. However, when a star finishes its fuel, it doesn't just dim off, but explodes before dying. The brightest supernova of the 20th century, SN1987A was actually 3 supernovae that exploded. Astronomers claim that it is located about 160 000 light years away. It is not possible to see stars more than 6000 light years away since stars were just created about 6000 years ago and their star-light would not have reached us. Using simple trigonometry, it can be shown that an upper bound for its distance from earth is 4144 light years away. Read more...

  8. Rings around Stars!

Some stars that have exploded have a ring around them. How did this form? Read more...
